5 Decisions That Lead To Business Growth
Posted On May 11, 2009
Make these 5 decisions and watch your business grow…
1. Decide that you will give before you take.
This decision, otherwise known as the Law of Reciprocity, is #1 for a lot of reasons. The most important is TRUST. Trust is the magic lubricant that greases the wheels of business. Without trust, business literally grinds to a halt.
When you give before you receive, you’re sending a clear message that you care, and that people can trust you. That they can set aside their unconscious fear of getting “hosed”. Giving first makes it easy for people to say “yes” to whatever you’re offering.
Let’s face it…we all prefer to do business with our friends… the people we know, like and trust. By making the decision to give before you receive, you send a clear signal that you are ready to make more friends – and do more business!
2. Decide to make your clients the centre of the universe.
Once you’re used to giving before you take, it’s much easier to keep your clients’ needs at the centre. It’s also easy to make decisions about how to spend your time, energy, and money.
If they need something – you make it, find it, connect them to it, solve problems about it – whatever they need. Your clients will love you, refer their friends, and help you grow!
3. Decide to create room to grow.
If you want your business to bloom, start by moving it to a bigger pot. Businesses in growth mode invariably require extra time, money, and energy.
Start with time. It’s the easiest thing to get under control. Keep a time log. Analyze your business goals and compare them with where your time is being spent. Focus on the top 20% of your activities that are producing 80% of your business growth, and strengthen these. Then strategically eliminate the clutter. Focus and time control are very powerful business fertilizers.
4. Decide that “outside my comfort zone” is a great place to be.
Growth invariably necessitates new ways of thinking or behaving. For some reason, people often get surprised by this. We think we should be able to do business as usual – but get different results. Well guess what?…life doesn’t work that way!
When you are in growth mode, things can get painful. You won’t know what to do. You’ll make mistakes. People may not appreciate you. Difficult problems will arise. At times, you’ll look like an idiot.
Get over it. Keep the right perspective. It’s not the end of the world – it’s the beginning. Yes, birth is chaotic – and the result is totally worth it!
5. Decide to act – and you’ll attract.
It’s hard to attract unless you act. And effective action requires solid skills – visioning, goal-setting, planning, time and energy management, and project management. This isn’t exactly sexy stuff. You’re not going to learn these skills at the feet of the latest guru. You’re not going to master them by taking one-off seminars that come in to your Inbox.
Get some good books or tapes that teach these topics systematically, and/or work with a coach or an accountability group. Soon you will have mastered what it really takes to be successful – actually implementing your amazing vision!
